Rumor: Apple could embrace an iOS like user interface for set-top box
;
More Apple TV rumors! (honestly I’m just excited to be reporting on something that ISN’T the Apple vs. Samsung trial) Last night word broke that Apple could be in talks with cable providers to make an Apple TV like set-top box. Tonight we learn a little bit more.
9To5Mac is reporting that Apple is working on a new UI for this rumored box, something much closer to that of iOS. Apparently reception to the current Apple TV’s UI has been less than stellar, which is really interesting considering the rumors that Steve Jobs himself rejected it. Consumers seem to share that sentiment by calling it “confusing and clunky”. A move in this direction wouldn’t surprise me in the least considering how much Apple works towards consistency across its product lines, and the iOS UI seems to resonate really well with consumers (just look at those sales figures…)
The new UI isn’t all that’s being reported either. The other major rumor that’s leaking out tonight is a feature that would let users watch a TV show anytime they wanted, even minutes after it started. Here’s a quote that 9To5Mac picked up
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company proposes giving viewers the ability to start any show at any time through a digital-video recorder that would store TV shows on the Internet. Viewers even could start a show minutes after it has begun. Time Warner Cable Inc. offers a limited version of this feature called Start Over.
This could be pretty cool, and rumors like these are potentially indicative of how far in the door of this business Apple wants to stick its foot. First the Apple TV, than the rumors of an Apple made TV set, and now this. What exactly is Apple trying to do here? Share you wild thoughts in the comments.
