Just over a year ago, before the iPad 2 launched, analysts were predicting that as time went on Android would catch up to the iPad in market share. The “knowledge” was based mostly on the story of the smartphone battle, with Google-powered handsets growing to a point of controlling around half of the market (most of those built by Samsung).
Analysts may have to re-project their guesses, as the third generation iPad has all but dominated the tablet world. Globally, shipments of iPads made up 68.2 percent of all tablets. Having shipped 17,402,000 iPads, it marks a remarkable growth from the same quarter last year’s total of just over 9.2 million. The nearest competitor – no surprise – is Samsung with almost 2.4 million tablets, a stunning 117.6% growth. Almost as impressive is ASUS’ increase from 397,000 units to 855,000. With the Nexus 7 having been launched this quarter there’s no doubt that Q3 results should be further buoyed by the partnership with Google.
If – and it’s a big if – Apple releases a smaller, cheaper iPad, the company’s share would increase even further and virtually monopolize the market in a similar way that the iPod lineup has done.
