Review:

With the new school year right around the corner, students should consider adding Anatomy & Physiology REVEALED to their back-to-school lists.

Available for iPad, A&P REVEALED enables users to practice on a virtual cadaver, blending real cadaver photos with layering techniques to reveal more than 5,000 anatomical structures.

A total of five modules are available: Skeletal and Muscular systems, Nervous system, Cardiovascular, Lymphatic & Respiratory systems, Integumentary, Digestive, Urinary, Reproductive & Endocrine systems, and Body Orientation, Tissues, and Cells & Chemistry.

Each are available for $12.99, or you can purchase the whole series for $49.99. Although that’s a pretty steep price tag for an app, it’s without a doubt the best anatomy app I’ve ever used (and as a former Kinesiology major, I’ve seen my fair share).

The app is completely interactive, letting you peel back layer after layer, as if you were working on an actual cadaver. Something that many students don’t regularly access to. And although you can’t quite get as hands on as you would in a real lab, the level of detail and amount of information provided is just as good.

Adding even more value to your experience are a number of key features, including histology slides, radiologic images (including x-ray, MRI, and CT images), videos and animations of muscle actions and joint movements, and audio pronunciations of each structure.

Additionally, this app can be used as a study companion with bookmarks that let you can save sections for future reference, notes, both print and audio, and quizzes, which help to gauge your proficiency.

I have been hands on with the app for about two weeks now, and I feel like I’m constantly discovering a new feature or trick. One that I will share with you is something the developers like to call “ghosting.” This is done by taking all the layers down in Dissection Mode, then going back to the first layer (usually the skin) and pulling it about half way up. I’ve had the best luck “ghosting” with the nervous system — something that students will likely benefit from, as it lets you see where certain nerves are in relation to the skin.

Although students and medical professionals will benefit the most from Anatomy & Physiology REVEALED, anyone with an interest in the human body will enjoy this app. However, I should warn you that this is a very in-depth and graphic app. If you’re just wondering which bone connects to your knee bone, or have a weak stomach, this app might not be for you.
