Rumor: New iMacs coming with Retina Displays on board

iMacs are an extremely important part of the Apple ecosystem. They provide extreme usability and functionality, especially considering their all-in-one design. The updates have been sporadic and hard to determine. When they weren’t included in the updates at WWDC, some people still held out hope that they weren’t completely forgotten about. Hope just might pay off if this new rumor turns out to be true.

According to hit-and-miss news source, Digitimes, Apple is reportedly planning to release new iMacs in the coming months. The supply chain is said to start shipping components for the all-in-ones in large volumes this month. Shipping is happening fast, supposedly in order to have the new product ready for a market release around October. DigiTimes’ sources also added another interesting tidbit of information and that is that the new computers will feature Retina Displays. The following comes from the digitimes.com:

The sources pointed out that Apple is pushing Retina Display for its products in hoping to surpass its competitors in terms of screen resolution since most other notebook and tablet PC vendors are still adopting Full HD display for their products; however, since there are only limited contents that are capable of supporting Retina Display, while Retina Display is a lot expensive than a Full HD panel, most PC vendors currently still have no plan to follow suit and launch product with high resolution panel.

To be honest, I am very anxious when rumors come up, especially ones of this magnitude. Throw in the fact that they’re from DigiTimes, who has had several “off” calls in the past, and you’ve got one skeptical guy. That being said, all rumors need to be taken with a grain of salt. As much as I would love a Retina equipped iMac, there is one big thing that keeps gnawing away at me….the price. The 15.4-inch Retina Macbook Pro starts above $2k. Could you imagine what a Retina iMac, which has a minimum screen of 21.5-inches, would cost? It is daunting, but who knows, I’m sure there are people out there who wouldn’t mind paying for one. It is an Apple product after all.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see a Retina equipped iMac come to market? Or is there another area that you would like to see updated? Let us know in the comments below.
