Rumor: iPad Mini will have Sharp IGZO display, cost $249

There have been rumors of an iPad Mini circulating for months now. It has died down over the past couple weeks, even more so around WWDC surprisingly. One thing about rumors…they don’t ever really go away. Looks like the iPad Mini hasn’t been getting enough talk time lately, so it’s back to the rumor mill.

According to various analysts, via Cult of Mac, more information on the mythical iPad Mini has been released. There has been a lot of speculation, but these specifics sound a little more solid. The purported device is said to have a 7.85-inch IGZO display made by Sharp. Also in tow is rumored pricing which is said to start at $249 and go up to $299 for the higher end model. Cult of Mac had the following on its site:

Not only will the iPad mini provide you with a door to Apple’s incredible ecosystem, but the device will reportedly also feature a 7.85-inch IGZO display from Sharp with up to 330 pixels per inch. That’s a slightly higher pixel density than the iPhone 4S. Not only are these displays thinner and lighter than existing iPad displays, but they are also offer higher contrast ratios and greater brightness, while consuming less power.

While the screen is an interesting rumor, to me the really intriguing info is the price point. Over the past month the tablet market has really been heating up, especially when it comes to selling tablets at a much more consumer friendly price. The Nexus 7 from Google is set to take aim at the Kindle Fire and – if these rumors pan out – the iPad Mini will try and dominate the ultra-portable tablet market as well. I think this is a great example of where competition can push companies to compete in both price and specs.

What do you guys think? Would you prefer a 7.85-inch iPad? Would you buy one over the competition? Let us know your thoughts down below
