Review:
If you’re looking for a new way to give your photos a little character, you should check out Frametastic.
The app lets you arrange photos into collage-like frames. You can choose from several different compositions, each able to hold between one and six images. Frametastic comes with 18 free frames, which offer plenty of variety. But if you can never have too many options, you can buy a bonus pack with 27 additional frames for $.99.
For additional customization, you can choose from six different themes, which are essentially backgrounds. You can swipe through options, including wood, sports, wedding, beach vacation, museum, and roses. These line the outside of your frames, and depending on your choice, could distract from your photo.
To insert an image, tap on the area where you’d like it to be placed. The app requires that you grant access to your location, otherwise you can choose to use your “old” photo library (which is the same thing as the “new” one). The only difference is that by denying location access, you won’t be able to insert images from Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, or Picasa. You can also choose to take a new picture.
You can pinch to zoom and swipe to get the perfect composition. If you double tap the image, you’ll be able to apply different Instagram-like effects (some of which require in-app purchases). These include 10 retro FX, 6 cinematic FX, 7 travel photography FX, 15 color FX, and 5 basic adjustment FX.
Along the bottom of the screen you’ll notice a toolbar. If you click on the first icon, you’ll be able to change the format from simple to postcard. You can also unlock three other options (landscape, portrait, and sky scape) for $.99. If you choose postcard, you’ll have the option to send it anywhere in the world for $.99 via Sincerely.
To share your image, click on the envelope icon. Here you’ll be able to choose between saving it to your library, sharing on Twitter (where you can either tweet it out or replace your profile picture), Facebook, Tumblr, instagram, or send it as a postcard.
The question mark icon is the Help tab, where you can get simple hints about using the app. Directly to the right of that is the Borders tab. Here you’ll be able to change the color and thickness of the border around your photo. The last icon enables you to tweak the corners of your image from straight to rounded.
Frametastic has experienced some stability and performance issues in the past, but the most recent update seems to have improved those issues. The developers noted that more performance improvements are slated for the next update as well. However, should the app crash mid-frame, Frametastic will automatically restore the frame you were working on. During testing, I didn’t run into any issues or crashing.
