New font, Avenir, appears in iOS 6
It would seem Apple is adding a new typeface in iOS 6 named “Avenir.” As you can see above, @NathanBowers on Twitter noticed that a new font appears in the iOS 6 Maps and on some of Siri’s many integrated services, such as the “Rotten Tomato” movie information service. If this turns out to be an entire new typeface for the OS, it will be the first major font switch of it’s kind for Apple and iOS. The only time that the font has been changed on iOS thus far was with iOS 4, when they updated the Retina-sporting iPhone to use Helvetica Neue to accommodate the higher resolution screens. Now all the legacy (320×480 display devices) use Helvetica and all Retina devices use Helvetica Neue. With the release of iOS 6 though, these devices may be getting a bump to a new font. Of course, they could just keep it to these select areas and keep the normal font across the rest of the OS. We will just have to wait and see.
Also, some Reddit users noticed the new font and started a Reddit discussion group here: I’m a big fan of the new typeface in iOS 6 maps
What do you think? Do you like the new font? Hope it comes to the rest of the OS? Let us know in the comments.

Seriously? A font change? This is news worthy? Jesus.
