Summary:

Songza aims to find the perfect playlist for what you’re doing at the moment, whether it’s psyching yourself up for Monday or mellowing out after a long day.

Review:

Whether you’re discovering related artists on Pandora or kicking off something fresh through Spotify, finding good music isn’t as challenging as it used to be. Looking for music that suits your mood or the time of day? Well, you guessed it, there’s an app for that.

Songza, a music curation and streaming service, offers you playlists that have been curated by music experts. But unlike Pandora and Spotify, Songza caters to your preferences, like the day and time, current mood, and common activities.

It’s Tuesday afternoon, so let’s check out what Songza has in store for us. Upon launch you’ll be greeted by Songza’s Concierge service. This menu changes throughout the day, but you can also skip ahead (or fall behind) and manually select the day and time.

Regardless the time of day or activity, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s say you’re craving an energy boost (who isn’t on a Tuesday afternoon?). From there, Songza narrows down your options even further: Happy Pop, Energetic Rap, Very Energetic Dance, Upbeat Classic Hits, or Rowdy Rock. Genres change depending on which Concierge service you select.

Once you decide on which genre you’re in the mood for, you’re presented with a couple of playlist options, complete with descriptions so you know what’s in store. If you tap on one of the playlists, you’ll receive more details, such as the bands/artists that are included as well as related playlists.

If you’re ready, just go ahead and tap on the Play button. Like what you hear? Tell Songza by tapping on the thumbs up or thumbs down icon in the bottom right corner. This will help the service get a better idea of the tunes you like. If you’re happy with your choice, you can share your playlist or purchase the song playing by tapping the menu icon in the top left corner.

Songza also lets you favorite playlists for quick reference the next time you open the app. These playlists can be accessed by tapping on My Playlists from the toolbar. There, you’ll be able to sort through recently played and your favorites.

If you’re not digging the song, you can skip to the next one, or you can select a different playlist all together by tapping the menu icon in the top right corner. You can also choose from Popular playlists, which are filtered by Featured, Trending, and All-Time favorites — this feature can be accessed from the toolbar as well.

You can also browse through Songza’s library through the Explore feature. Here, everything is sorted by genre, activity, mood, decade, culture, and so on.

Songza plays even while you check your inbox, text a friend, or catch up on some reading. Late-night music listeners will appreciate the timer. Through Settings, you can tell Songza to stop playing after 15-120 minutes.

Overall Songza is an excellent music app considering it’s free. Each playlist offers a lot of variety, and navigating the music service is a piece of cake. If you’re looking for a specific song or band, it’s probably not for you. But if you need an extra something to make your morning commute more bearable or help unwinding after a long day, Songza’s got you covered..

Does any one know when the concierge time changes? It goes from night to late night at 12:00 pm but I'm not sure about the rest. I think around 4:00am to morning, 12:00am to afternoon, 5:00pm to evening, and 10:00pm to night.

Also, is there any way to change the names/remove the folders that you can save playlists to?

And does a playlist start back up where you left off at?

Thanks in advance, Songza's FAQ is very limited.
