WSJ: Next iPhone’s 4-inch screens on order

To say that Apple would be planning a 4 inch screen on the next-gen iPhone would not be anything new. People have been wanting a larger screen ever since the first 4 inch android phone was released. It’s always been nothing more than hopeful wishing up until this point, but that all might change with the next iPhone.

According to a story from The Wall Street Journal, Apple has ordered screens that are reportedly bigger than the 3.5 inch screens they are known for using. The Wall Street Journal wrote the following,

“Apple, which is expected to launch its next-generation iPhone later this year, has ordered screens from its Asian suppliers that are bigger than the ones used in iPhones since they debuted in 2007, people familiar with the situation said.Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.”

At this point with Apple, it should go without saying that every rumor is just a rumor, until it is announced by Tim Cook himself at the iPhone Keynote. That being said, The Wall Street Journal has gotten it right multiple times in the past about new iPhone features before they launched.

Personally, I would love a 4 inch screen. I’m not sure why Apple hasn’t done this already, but I think it’s overdue. Many people, like myself, love the constantly updating iOS, but feel the screen size limits it. Apple could only make more money and more consumers happy if they increased the screen.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you buy another iPhone if the screen size stays at 3.5 inches? Leave us your thoughts in the comments down below

honestly I cant take what anonymouse is saying with any sort of seriousness. Especially after referencing such a poorly written piece. I actually hope you haven't really linked to that page "a ton of times!"

AaronGWilson It may not be up to your high standards, but the information is still valid. The point being made is the inherent limitations to iOS. Apple made a unique aspect ratio and other limitations to help restrict the use of third party things that did not conform. Its the same reason why the first iPhone has such recessed headphone jacks that people were actually trying to whittle down their old headphone jacks to make them fit before giving in to buy Apple earphones for 3-5 times the cost, and why a/v cables for newer iphones and ipods dont work because the new iOS versions have software built in to prevent the use of non microchipped a/v cables, with the microchipped ones....of course...being only from Apple or exclusive merchants.

These limitations were good for a while, but with apple having more and more pressure to create a bigger screen, they are going to have to find a way around their own restrictions. This, in itself, poses a few problems. Sure they can make a bigger screen. However, the UI wont scale to fit the new screen so what you have is black bars like they have now when playing a move with proper aspect ratio. You may get a 4 inch screen, but it just means a great deal if cropping and black bars and unused real estate.

Then many people just ask "why not just release the API to make it scalable".The fact is that even when apple released its first ipad and when they released the retina display, apple alone couldnt even be bothered to get all their apps compatible with the new tech. So how do we expect all the other developers to do the same. Especially those that are no longer supporting their apps in any significant sense. We are still waiting on many of those developers to update to new tech that came about over 2 years ago....and waiting....and waiting....and waiting.

You will also run into the issue with accessories. Until now, most of the iphones have has very similar dimensions, meaning high compatible among most accessories. Not all, of course, but most. With a larger display is means that the iphone will have to increase physical dimension as well. This would make almost all other accessories outdated and obsolete for the new model. Which means another flow of cash to apple for new accessory purchases, but also means a lot of upset consumers who have spent tons of money on clocks and speakers and tons of other things.

Those are just a few things hindering a bigger screen.

Please, do me a favor and show me some evidence against my own. I know you want to point out my flaws in the information to try and make it sound like I am just ranting nonsense, so I would like to see what your information is.

TheOneandOnlyAnonymouse the information is: Just wait and see.. Before Apple invented do anything, they are impossible. After they do it you will just say 'oh well..". I hope you will still read this after Apple releases the 4-inch(I am certainly sure) iphone without any flaws..

"Just wait and see.. Before Apple invented do anything, they are impossible" ha. really? apple hasnt done anything that other companies werent already doing in one way or another. Seriously, name me one thing that apple has done that was truly unique and apple only and never done in any sense by any other company.

TheOneandOnlyAnonymouse And please, don't ask for any sort of proof or evidence on thata can be done. As I mentioned yesterday, If we knew it, we will be at Apple's lab, well at least you won't be in your big and powerful tech company.

trying to claim something can be done just because its a certain company is asinine.  That just shows the blind faith people have in companies. Companies like apple are not infallible. They are not omnipotent. They are not able to accomplish anything. They still havent gotten notifications right, even after stealng from android. They didnt have mms for a while. they didnt take video. they didnt have 3g. they still dont have 4g. they dont have widget support. they have reception issues since the original iphone (I love the "iCall" parody). and the list goes on and on and on and on. I could name a TON of things the iphone doesnt have and cant do. So if they cants get all of these things completely right and perfect after 5 years, what makes you think they can pull off a drastic change like a 4 inch screen. Especially, when it means recoding of so many apps. This recoding is something apple is still working on to get all their apps up to par for ipad and iphone and ipod. They cant even get all their own apps working on all their own devices, even for tech thats years old.. So how do they expect to be able to have all the thousands of developers do the same?

btw, Im not really saying that they couldnt plop a 4 inch screen down on the device. However, the outcome would not be the smooth iOS most people like. We would see massive cropping, incompatible apps by the truckload, obsolete accessories, loss of retina display marketing, and soooo much more. Its just not worth it for apple to do that. They would rather piss off a few sheep and then have those sheep still buy their product, than do something like a 4 inch screen when it would cause so many issues and show just how bad of a platform they really are, especially when they have to go slightly outside their own walled garden.

HAHAHA iOS 6 announced and same old same old. New maps and facebook integration. Wow I Am Blown Away. No device can match that awesome new revolutionary magical unicorn crap that apple has now. Except every other phone on the market lol. My old flip phone has turn by turn navigation in 2005

They would at least have to hit the 4.3" mark to take seriously. People with little hands even got over the size of the original Evo lol.

It's good to see them finally putting a 4 inch retina on the next iPhone, but all i want to see next is revamp for iOS. I've often brought up widget integration and customization, (thats why I'm with Android now) but I think it is really time for it now. The simple grid panels are cute, but just a tad more customizations would really make users happy. I'm not talking about an Android clone here, I'm talking Apple widgets which are integrated into themed homescreens or hubs if you will. For example, when you get apps like facebook, twitter, itunes or instagram, you should have the option to make them a homescreen with everything you need at your fingertips.

I think it would be a lot more useful on the iPad as well and it would retain that "easy to use" Apple's fans seem to appreciate. But that just me, honestly I'd like that idea on any platform, however iOS (and Windows Phone) needs something like this. Back to the 4-inch screen, I think Apple should tread these waters carefully and try to play off the old form factor of the 3GS. I know the designers with Apple can think of something, they're not dumb, but  Android OEM's pushed a lot of form factors last year, so if it even resembles anything remotely similar to any of those phones, I'm sure those companies will be looking for revenge. Not sure if HTC may want revenge for what Apple is doing by blocking the One-series. After all, they too can claim that Apple is copying their design by giving their device a 4-inch screen.

anonymouse, dont you think apple can break the limitation by requesting the app developer to recode? It is not impossible, and please don't act like you are the only smart guy here, as I'm sure most of them had read this. It is not how it is impossible, just how will Apple do to make it possible, and by the way I am sure you don't know the method, or you'll be sitting in Apple's lab right now instead of telling us it cannot be done.
