If you have been following the rumor mill lately then you might recall a rumor that Apple is looking to dropping Google‘s map in favor of its own proprietary maps application that it has been developing. Thanks to BGR, there are now some pictures as to what Apple’s map application might look like.
Boy Genius Report got some pictures from a source inside Apple then made a mock up based on the images. I have to say that they look awesome. The rumor goes on to say that Apple will be including turn-by-turn directions in iOS 6 as well.
Boy Genius Report wrote the following report:
“Apple has been working on an in-house mapping solution for a few years, and it appears as if the company is finally ready to release a new Maps app for iOS, sidestepping Google’s mapping data for its own….To access 3D mode, which will make use of Apple’s C3 Technologies acquisition, you have to peel back the lower right corner of Maps just like the current version and enable 3D mode. Once enabled, you can switch in and out of 3D mode by tapping a 3D icon in the lower left corner.”
During a short back and forth on twitter, it became clear that BGR’s mockup was based on Nokia’s OVI Maps (font gave it away). But, it’s still interesting to have an idea as to what the 3D maps might look like.
