More iPhone 5 rumors: Same size, 4G LTE, Micro-Dock, October release

Just when you thought we might be safe from the iPhone 5 rumors for a little while, more than should have existed by now have cropped up unexpectedly. So far, everything’s fitting in well with my satirical prediction timeline. (If you didn’t read that, you totally should.) The latest comes from an iMore source. The informant claims that the next iPhone could have 4G LTE connectivity, a micro dock connector, and that it will be out in October. Unusually though, the source also stated that the screen size could be remaining the same – again.

“So to sum up, iPhone 5,1 is on track for:

  • Similar if not same sized screen (currently 3.5-inch but not set in stone)
  • 4G LTE radio
  • New “micro dock” connector
  • Fall/October 2012 release”

The 4G LTE radio doesn’t surprise me one bit, neither does the Fall release. To go back to a summer launch only 9 months after the most popular iPhone’s release seems a little unfair on those who invested. Apple has never launched an iDevice less than 12 months after the previous generation, so, October sounds right.

To say that I’d be surprised at Apple launching another 3.5″ display would be far from the truth. It’s exactly like Cupertino to stick to its guns and not pay much attention to what’s going on in the market. That being said, anything less than 4.0″ in today’s market is too small for a smartphone. I would be disappointed, not surprised. Micro-Dock is neither here nor there. I don’t like the current 30-pin dock connector, it’s big and ugly. But it does its job well, and changing would mean needing more than one USB cable for my iDevices, which is ever-so-slightly inconvenient.

What do you think? Would you be disappointed if Apple launched the next iPhone with the same display again?
