Jobs kept letter from Bill Gates by his bed before he died

By the things Jobs said in his biography about Bill Gates, one might think that the two of them were sworn enemies. He describe Gates as a “basically unimaginative person” who “has never invented anything,” yet this was not the whole story. In an interview Gates mentioned that he wrote a letter to Jobs in the days leading up to the Apple co-founder’s death; he loved it so much he kept it by his bedside every night.

“There was no peace to make. We were not at war,” Gates said. “We made great products, and competition was always a positive thing.” Despite all of the bashing on Gates, Steve Jobs had the greatest reverence for him, his wife admitting that Isaacson’s book didn’t “paint a picture of the mutual respect” the two had for one another.

In the interview Gates also revealed that in his letter, he told Jobs “he should feel great about what he had done and the company he had built.” In my opinion, it is good to hear that it was a friendly competition. After Jobs’s passing, there was a lot of talk about how he was not such a nice man, but this makes him seem just a bit nicer.
