As usual, a couple of months before a suspected iOS product launch, DigiTimes is in full swing. Yet more of its sources near the supply chain are claiming that Apple is preparing a 7.85″ iPad. According to the site, the smaller version will go on sale towards the end of next year, with the 3rd generation model going on sale around March.
Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad prior to the fourth quarter of 2012 in addition to a new iPad scheduled to be released at the end of the first quarter, according to sources in the supply chain.
If the publication’s record is anything to go by, I’m sure we can dismiss this one pretty sharpish. The same site predicted a smaller and cheaper iPhone would be launched at the same time as the drastically redesigned “iPhone 5″. I personally do not see this happening, at all. The predominant reason being that it’s tough to make a tablet of any kind and make profit below the $500 mark. Kindle’s Fire makes a loss at $200, and is made from much cheaper components and materials than the iPad. If Apple was to release a smaller iPad the difference in price between the smaller and “full-size” models would be so minimal, everyone would just opt for the 9.7″ version.
As I said when people were predicting a 2011 holiday release for the iPad 3: It’s not going to happen. Period.
