Unlocked iPhone 4S being sold at select Apple stores
T-mobile customers, rejoice! Keep it restrained though. 9to5Mac received some information that Apple has already begun selling the unlocked version of the iPhone 4S at select stores across the US. The company has not made it official yet, but developer, Steven Troughton-Smith, went in to an Apple retail store and purchased an unlocked iPhone 4S off contract.
The device will be available for sale, officially, from November. The device is GSM only, and will cost $649, $749 and $849 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively. The unlocked phone reportedly comes with an AT&T SIM, but, stick a T-mobile SIM in and plug it in to iTunes and you’ll get the message displayed above. Unfortunately, due to bandwidth compatibility it will only work on Tmo’s EDGE network, and not 3G. I don’t know if you need a secret handshake or password to convince your Apple store to sell you one, or if it’s just at manager’s discretion. Either way, you could possibly get one if you ask nicely.

You can buy an unlocked 4s today at any apple store you just have to ask for an AT&T phone no contract for full price. Do not ask for unlocked. Plug it into iTunes and it's unlocked. Just did it today and works just fine with tmobile.
