Rumor: Sprint coughs up $20 billion for iPhones – getting exclusive on iPhone 5?

Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has entered in to a $20 billion deal with Apple for iPhones over the next 4 years. With the huge amount of money being spent by the US’ number 3 carrier, the company is set to lose money on the agreement until 2014. However, it does mean that we are almost guaranteed to see an iPhone on Sprint.

In the past, when it’s come to iPhone rumors, I’ve often asked that you take the speculation with a pinch of salt. With this next one I’d ask that you evaporate the Dead Sea, collect all the salt left on the bottom of the ocean bed and dive in. BGR, after reading the WSJ tweet, apparently contacted a source who stated that as part of the deal Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 exclusively! (Sound of dropped smashing coffee cups here – followed by deathly silence.) I know, I didn’t believe it either.

According to the site, the iPhone 5 will be available – exclusively on Sprint – as a WiMAX device. I know it seems ridiculous, and I struggled to hold back the sarcastic laughs, but the article seemed serious. It’s not April 1st either, I checked my calendar. I don’t know what’s less likely: that the device would be exclusive to the third most popular carrier, or that it’s going to be WiMAX. Since Sprint itself is moving towards LTE adoption, I doubt Apple would invest/waste any time or money on this dead technology. You have to remember, the company would have to create a brand new device, with new internals and chipset just to launch on Sprint? Sorry, but I call BS.

What do you guys think? BGR’s “exclusive” rumors have been ridiculously off-target in the past few months, is there any credibility in this one?

sprints data network sucks already they cant handle the iphone

I think it makes complete sense from sprints stand point. They are the only carrier to still offer true unlimited data. If everyone is like me and are tired of companies slowing down data speeds after a certain cap. It’s either buy a iPhone and get punished for using it or get the new bad a$$ iPhone 5 and use it the way apple intended. I see sprint in the running for #1 carrier in US if this turns into reality.

Forget the fact that Sprint would then raise prices and put a cap/throttle on data as a result of their already crappy network getting over-congested…

Apple doesn’t care how much data you use on the iPhone, their concern is user experience at the basic level. Whatever data you want to use is up to you. Not their concern. Plus, Apple knows they’ll get more $$ via Vzw and AT&T, seeing how they are already proven networks. Apple hasn’t had any experience w/ Sprint, so why would they put all their eggs in Sprint’s basket, especially for a huge release like this. It’s not logical, dude.
