Summary: App discovery made easy through recommendations from friends.

Review: Sorting through thousands upon thousands of apps can be frustrating, which makes finding new and interesting apps to download pretty difficult. Kinetik is a social networking app that focuses on app discovery instead of status updates and location-based check-ins. And instead of reading through a variety of top-ten lists, the app provides recommendations from friends.

When you first launch the app you’ll be asked to create an account through Twitter. Anyone already using the app that you follow or that is following you will be added as your friend. By clicking on the Activity tab you’ll see a feed of all the apps your friends have shared or liked.

Beneath the Apps tab are three feed options to choose from: From Friends, which displays all apps shared by friends and how many times they’ve been shared, Trending, which are apps that have been shared the most throughout the world, and Category, which features 20 different categories to choose from and the top apps in each one.

Clicking on an app will give you the option to view the app’s profile or its activity on Kinetik. The App Profile features the number of times it has been shared on Kinetik, screenshots, information from the App Store. There is also a button that will take you to the App Store app on your phone if you’d like to download it. If you tap on App Activity you will see who has shared and/or liked it on Kinetik.

Your profile page features information pulled from you Twitter profile, such as your bio and website. From here you can view your activity within the app, which apps you’ve shared, and any notifications you received from other Kinetik users.

There are two ways to share an app: through the Share button on the lower tool bar, or by clicking the red arrow icon when viewing an App Profile. You’ll be able to add some information (in 140 characters) about why you’re sharing the app. It’s very similar to drafting a tweet – you can also add a hashtag or mention another Twitter user in your message. The app offers the ability to share with your Facebook friends as well, which can be done after syncing your account through the Settings.

Kinetik is definitely one of the more solid discovery apps that I’ve seen. It runs smoothly and the design is very inviting and intuitive. The only drawback is that there aren’t many people using it yet (at least from my network) so you’ll have to encourage your friends to join. Overall I think it’s a great way to learn about apps and make some new friends in the process.
