Lens makers on board to supply 8 MP cameras for iPhone 5 – rumor
According to a report out of Taiwan Economic News, both Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical are set to supply Apple with lenses for 8 megapixel cameras for the iPhone 5. For those that don’t know, these two companies are responsible for many of the internal camera components found in the iPhone 4. This makes it all the more likely that they would have a hand in developing the next-generation device.
This latest camera rumor seems to make sense with the June rumor that claimed OmniVision would supply sensors in the shooter for an 8 MP camera. The iPhone’s camera has historically been one of the best cellphone cameras out there, and with Largan, Genius and OmniVision behind the next one (allegedly, anyway), the iPhone 5 looks like it’ll follow suit.
One interesting thing to note is that, as AppleInsider points out, even with the slew of various iPhone 5 rumors out there, everyone seems pretty confident that the device will feature an 8 megapixel camera. Many reputable sources such as Bloomberg and WSJ have gone on record saying the iPh5 will feature an 8 mp camera, and this bit of info has made an appearance in almost every iPhone 5 mockup we’ve seen.
The only thing that makes me a bit skeptical about this rumor is the fact that it seems a bit late, doesn’t it? If the iPhone 5 is supposed to debut some time in the late September/early October timeframe, shouldn’t the component suppliers have been lined up months ago? I suppose it could be that they were, and we’re just finding out about it now, but something seems fishy here.
What do you guys think? Will we see an 8 MP camera in the iPhone 5, or do you picture something different for the next-gen device? Weigh in below in the comments or on twitter.
