How Google’s acquisition of Motorola will affect us
Big news this morning out of Google and Motorola Mobility – the search giant is going to buy Motorola for 12.5 billion dollars. Motorola Mobility is the former cellphone division of Motorola, Inc., which was spun off to cut costs. Motorola Mobility makes cellphones like the original ‘Droid’ and ‘Droid 2′, which all run the Android OS. But now that Google is about to acquire the cell phone manufacturer, what is going to happen to 3rd party manufacturers like HTC and Samsung?
Let’s just say the picture does’t looks pretty for Sammy and HTC. The devices they make are known for their lack-luster batteries and skins. If something doesn’t change really soon, these devices could go from being top-of-the-line to bottom-of-the-garbage-can. With Google’s new business model, Motorola and Google will be able to put their R&D teams together creating a new phone that is perfect in both software in hardware, mainly because they were made for each other (literally).
This business model is exactly like Apple’s, whose philosophy is to always design the hardware for the software, and the software for the hardware. This is the reason that iOS doesn’t run on Motorola Devices and why Mac OS X only runs on a Mac (note: I know there is such a thing as a Hackintosh, but Apple doesn’t support or endorse it). It’s what has brought Apple from nearly bankrupt to the second largest company in the world.
With Google making it’s own line-up of phones (via Motorola), we might see a new Android smartphone which will actually have the strength to single-handedly take on the iPhone. We might even see a new endorsement by Google for accessories, similar to the ‘Designed for iPhone’. This would create an entire new Android ecosystem and revitalize the little green man (I’m talking about the Android mascot, in case you didn’t know).
This is a no-doubt a game-changer in the market and is really going challenge what we think about Android. Do you think that this new merger is going to create something revolutionary (maybe even magical)? Let us know in the comments below or by sending me a tweet.

ha ha you mean Android isn't guilty of stealing Apple IP with the development of their OS...in the MOTO buy out won't have any effect on Apple...people will still buy iPhones....clearly the UI resonates with mainstream users...Android may have the numbers but Apple will outsell all the manufacturers....rather than focus on iOS, Google should worry about WP7...once Nokia gets going with their new phones....they will certainly eat into the Android market share.
