Apple brings App Store to 33 more countries
Over the past few days, it’s become increasingly obvious that Apple wants to ditch physical software discs in favor of digital App Store downloads. Clearly inspired by the success the iOS App Store has already achieved, the company has been taking strides to expand it even further, as well as build up it’s Mac counterpart.
The most recent of these actions has been to extend availability of both the iOS App Store and the Mac App Store to 33 additional countries:
Algeria, Angola, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, British Virgin Islands, Brunei, Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Dominica, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Iceland, Montserrat, Nigeria, Oman, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, Uzbekistan, Yemen
This brings the total number of countries that have access to the App Stores up to 123.
And thus, Apple’s ploy for world domination continues. But seriously, it’s great to see such crucial features go to customers who have probably been waiting for them for a long time. Recently I talked about what the iPhone was like before the App Store, but I totally forgot that there are still many people without it. I’m glad that Apple is finally remedying that.
Now, as great as it is, we all know that Apple didn’t do this just to be nice. This expansion will undoubetdly rack up droves of additional downloads, further solidifying it as the App Store king. The iOS App Store recently celebrated the 15 billion download mark, and the Mac App Store had over 1 million Lion downloads in its first day on sale. It will be very interesting to see how this new expansion affects these numbers.
What do you think of all this? Are you pleased that Apple is expanding the App Stores, or are you disappointed that this takes one more step away from physical software discs? And, if you happen to live in one of the countries listed above, are you excited to finally have the App Store?? Comment below or let me know via twitter.
