Last week saw a devastating event occur in the Chengdu Foxconn plant. A freak explosion was witnessed in the factory responsible for producing iPad 2 units. At the time we’d heard that only a few people had been injured, not it’s been confirmed that 3 died as a result of the accident, and 9 were injured. No one knows exactly how the explosion took place. Some believe that it was the result of high levels of Aluminum dust in the air – which is combustable – due to poor ventilation.
It was expected that the incident would affect iPad 2 production, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. According to China Times, it didn’t affect any production lines. I really hope this gets Apple’s attention, and that the company would finally step in and do something about working conditions in these factories. Needless to say, our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected.
