App Store Description: Thumpies is a unique rhythm based music game for players of all ages. By correctly matching the beat of bouncing Thumpies, the player progresses through a song. If the player hits the targets in time, their Thump’o’meter slowly rises, but if the player misses or hits out of time, the meter falls. Unlike typical rhythm based games, Thumpies uses a mechanic of bouncing in time instead of just a series of notes. One way to describe Thumpies is a rhythm game crossed with juggling.
Summary:Thumpies is a colorful and quirky rhythm game featuring 16 levels where you build a unique song, track by track, by making the Thumpies bounce just right. Although it doesn’t support the Retina display, the colorful, fun graphics and groovy music make this a fun game to check out.
Review: Thumpies is a dazzling and fun rhythm game. There are 16 levels, each featuring a unique song. You progress through the level in a series of half a dozen stages. Each stage builds a layer of the song, and eventually creating the entire song. In each stage, Thumpies fall from the sky in a rhythmic order. You must tap the drum where the Thumpie is to land. If you do it in time, the Thump’o’meter increases allowing you to move to the next stage. As you move up, the levels get progressively harder, the songs more complex. At the beginning of each level you can choose from three difficulties.
The premise is simple, and the execution mouth wateringly great. It’s fun listening to your song evolve, and the Thumpies are so colorful, creepy and cute. The graphics are stellar — colorful and vibrant — although not Retina compatible (grrr!). Still, it looked fine on my iPhone 4, minimal pixelization so I can’t complain much. Even on my 3G the animation was smooth and free of any lag.
This is a great game, but I do have two complaints: the aforementioned lack of Retina graphics, and lack of updates. It would be nice if periodically new levels/songs would be added. Still, despite these two gripes, Thumpies is a well executed game which is definitely with the price.
