Alibaba, online seller and leak source extraordinaire, has posted some pretty interesting items — supposedly cases for the future iPhone 5. (Yes, already. What? Just because the iPad 2 gossip is over, you didn’t think the rumor mongering would stop altogether, did you?)
The pics show openings for all the usual ports, inputs and other hardware — like the power, mute switch, volume and camera/flash. They also reveal the size for this next-gen iPhone, and these are… [drum roll] exactly the same as the previous one.
If the images are to be believed (and that’s a big “if”), the next Apple handset won’t be any bigger (or smaller) than the current iPhone 4. So, it seems, the new version of the device may not be all that new after all. In fact, judging from the looks of this, it could wind up being more like an iPhone 3G-to-3GS evolutionary baby step. Lending credence to this theory is the fact that the guys at Alibaba were the same ones who nailed the iPad 2 form factor (via leaked pics of cases), not to mention the front camera on the iPod Touch.
Then again, even if these cases were for real, they still neither confirm nor invalidate the theory of a larger screen getting crammed into the same size shell. Since the design schematics of the iPhone 5 already had its coming out, any current product design or manufacturing for this next-gen iPhone could very possibly be spot on.
That brings us to another question — if we do see the same form factor and most of the same external hardware again, will this new model also keep the same antennas? If so, knowing what you know now, would you still be hot for this version? Let us know what you think in the comments.
