Fetching a fair trade-in for that iPad 1

For some of us, it may feel like we only just got the iPad 1, and now look — it suddenly lost some of its luster in light of the iPad 2 details. Expect that your ambivalence over the last-gen device will be even worse when the new version actually arrives on March 11, when you watch your cohorts galavant around with their new camera-equipped, dual-processing tablets, vid chatting their faces off with the new tablet.

If you’re sitting there, a little less awed by the once droolworthy iPad 1 and wondering how to squeeze enough out of the food budget to pay for the new version, take heart. Maybe you don’t have to go hungry.

According to NextWorth, those gurus of tech trade-ins, you can kick your old tablet toward your new one. The site has announced some trade-in options for iPad 1 owners looking to recoup some of the expenses, payable as cash or a gift card. For example, the 16GB 3G model of the iPad 1 is trading in for as much as 65% of the original value.

Says the press release:

Apple products tend retain value more than other brands, and the iPad is no exception. Current trade-in values on NextWorth for iPads with “Light Wear” (as of 2/23/11) are:

• iPad 16G Wifi: $255
• iPad 32GB Wifi: $285
• iPad 64GB Wifi: $310
• iPad 16G Wifi + 3G: $298
• iPad 32G wifi + 3G: $350
• iPad 64GB Wifi + 3G: $390

NextWorth is also partnered with Target for in-store trade-ins too! So you can hit up the NextWorth site or, if you’re interested in getting a store credit or a pre-paid store shopping card, contact your local Target store and find out if/when they’ll accept the trade-ins. (Most will, starting from March 13, but contact your own area location to be sure.)

Anyone going to take them up on this offer? Or do you know another great site for trade-ins? Let us know in the comments section below.

I bought an iPad 1 for $350.00 just the other day. Amazon and eBay are viable options for sellers and buyers alike.

I sold my 16 GB 3G version 3 weeks ago for $550 on craigslist. Perfect timing for the new one.

The figures stated above are not even 65%. For example, the 16GB 3G model of the iPad 1 is trading in at 65% of the original value. ==> I bought iPad 1 last april for $630 plus tax. 65 * 630/100 = 409.50. So, I am not even counting tax on 630 dollars which is additionally 55 bucks atleast. The value you stated is iPad 16G Wifi + 3G: $298. That's a big difference. In fact the values are less than 50%. A iPad 16G Wifi + 3G: $298 is 43% of $686 (630+56 tax). Now, let's take into account the reduced price apple made in last couple of days. iPad 16G Wifi + 3G: $530. So, 65*530/100= 344.5 And that doesn't even include tax. Still not 298$. I would give my original iPad 1 to a charity and get a tax credit than selling my iPad for that low price.

Actually, that's a really good point. I'd imagine that the 65% trade-in value must be an upper limit — say, for pristine, perfect devices. (I'll doublecheck that with the company, though, just to be crystal clear.) Since the examples they gave me were for items that show "light wear," it actually made sense to me that the values would be for less. But again, it's always good to clarify. Condition of the tablets can definitely alter things. But it's good to bear that in mind. Thanks for the reminder, TS75.

Thanks for writing back. As always you follow things promptly! Love that! Mine is pretty much like new. It was always in the apple case, never taken out of my home. Never dropped. Not a single scratch anywhere. You won't be able to tell it is used by anyone. I used it very very lightly. Any dirt, I use to wipe with with lint free cloth (the one used by glasses). I don't use it for weeks since past 3 months. I have company laptop and I think I do most of my browsing on it. So wondering what someone would offer? Not that I am interested in selling as I don't find any compelling reason to go to iPad 2 as I don't facetime. Plus speed wasn't a number 1 issue on iPad 1. It is not like the difference between iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. That was a different scenario. I don't use applications which requires dual core. So, I don't have any reason to justify why would I buy iPad 2? I don't even like the new design of iPad 2 as it is copied from iPad touch. At least iPad 1 was little different. So we will see. But thanks for checking back Adriana! :-)
