2/2/11 – The Day of Digital Papers (i.e., The Daily to get official)

It’s official. According to 9to5Mac, invitations were sent out to some Apple news sites and famous pundits alike. Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp., and Eddie Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet Services, will introduce the much hyped, tablet-only newspaper “The Daily.”

Wow, Apple. First the Verizon iPhone and now the first newspaper to be created exclusively for tablets?! Two major innovations from Apple and its partners to further the already great experience of the mobile devices most of us use everyday (except for not being able to make a call on AT&T). I, for one, cannot wait. The tablet only newspaper will launch in New York on February 2. The new newspaper could revolutionize the way we read. Or it could flop. But, no doubt, it will be a new, awesome experience for all iPad users.

“The Daily” might even be a web newspaper that is accessed by a HTML5 browser(much like Safari on all our iOS devices and desktops). This would allow News Corp. to create one, unified version of “The Daily”. Android tablets, iPads, and even the yet-to-be-released Blackberry Playbook would be able to view it. However, John Gruber of Daring Fireball points out that Eddie Cue might announce in-app subscriptions, which would really help push magazines on the iPad.

In related news, iOS 4.3 might even be finalized in order to fully launch “The Daily”. Whether it’s a web app, or a native application, this newspaper has a lot to live up to. If Murdoch is personally unveiling it, it must be something great.

There are pundits putting prices around $0.99 USD/ week. Considering how much a normal paper costs, this could be a great deal for heavy news readers.
