Have you tried Google Goggles yet?

Fan of the Google Mobile app? Having all your Google services accessible from one place is handy, and that speech feature’s really cool. And the application got yet another neat feature this month — Google Goggles. In case you haven’t taken it for a spin yet, Google Goggles works like an augmented-reality browser, letting you conduct searches using visuals. Just take a picture, and the app will evaluate the subject and use it to search the internet.

You can snap a product, book, famous painting, etc… but personally, I find that it works best when the subject is a barcode, book or a well-known landmark. Snapping something more obscure, like your uncle or that cool Etsy wallet you just snagged online, doesn’t work too well. And since it requires clear, focused images, it’s made for the autofocus goodness of the iPhone 4 and 3GS. But if you’re able to take crystal clear pictures, then try this out too — take a picture of text in a foreign language, and watch the app translate it. That’s just neat.

It may not be perfect, but there’s a lot of potential with this. And as the technology improves, it will be neat to do more searches via voice and/or picture taking, bypassing the need to type on that little onscreen keyboard. 

Seems like Google’s been on fire lately, with Google Docs editing and the official Google Voice application reaching the Store. I kind of can’t wait to see what iOS users are going to get next.
