August is almost upon us, and there will be hordes of freshmen getting ready for college soon. But IKEA linens, posters and itty bitty fridges and microwaves aren’t the only must-have items for fall. Thanks to Apple’s back-to-school specials, more students than ever are going to university equipped with iDevices, whether for play or for study.

TiP vlogger Jake, who’ll be hitting Fordham University this fall, scouted out some handy items to help out his fellow Apple-loving college cohorts. In Part 1, Jake takes a look at products, from devices to accessories, and spotlights his favorite essentials for students. (In the upcoming Part 2, he’ll take a look at must-have apps.)

Devices: 15-inch MacBook Pro starting at $1,799 (Psst! Apple has a special: Buy a Mac for college, get a free iPod Touch through September 7. Click here for more); iPad Wifi model starts at $499; iPhones, either the 3GS for $99 or the iPhone 4 from $199.

Apple iPad Case: Protective case and folding stand, sells at Apple.com for $39.

iHome iP90BZ Dual Alarm Clock Radio for iPhone/iPod with AM/FM: Dual alarm clock with remote control, AM/FM radio, sleep/snooze functions and universal dock for various iPod and iPhone models (excluding iPhone 4). Keyboards: Apple Wireless keyboard supports Bluetooth, compatible with iPad and iPhone 4/3GS/3G with iOS 4. The Apple iPad Keyboard Dock is iPad only, comes with the dock and syncs/charges via cable. Both cost $69.

Music pillows: Two options at different price points — Beach Speaker Pillow for $9.99 and Sharper Image Sleep Tunes Pillow for $59.99.

iHome Charging Station: Multiple device charging station with two 30-pin docks (one for charging alone and one for charging and syncing), along with powering up other devices. Price is $50.

MobileMe subscription: First 60 days free, then $99 for a year.

Netflix: The least expensive plan offers one DVD at a time for $8.99 per month, with unlimited Instant Watch streaming. The Netflix app for the iPad offers free access to Netflix customers for viewing content in their Instant Watch queues. An iPhone app, announced at WWDC in June, is also on the way.

Klipsch Image S4 earbuds: In-ear personal audio that offer excellent sound worthy of more expensive models, for an $79.99 price tag.
