iPhone jailbreaking legalized by Library of Congress

Since the very first restricted, and carrier locked iPhone was released countless ifreedom fighters have been “jailbreaking” and unlocking their devices. This can be for many reasons, but predominantly they want to be able to do whatever they want with their iPhone. Whether it’s getting unapproved apps, or putting Android on an Apple phone, it’s the only these guys have been able to get their handsets the way they like. Unfortunately, this has always been frowned upon by “do-gooder” iOS users, (Like myself), who keep everything as it is.

Good news now though is that you no longer have to do this in secret, or organized in some suspicious manner. The Library of congress has now made it legal to jailbreak/unlock or “root” your mobile devices. It’s not specific to Apple iPhones, it can be WinMO devices, Android, or what ever you like. The key phrase from the official statement is below:

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

This doesn’t mean it’ll be any easier to get it done, it’s not like it’s gonna happen if you take your phone to Apple or AT&T. But you will be able to do it with a clean conscience, without feeling guilty.
