Has the white iPhone 4 sprung a leak?
It looks like TheStreet just shed some new light on the white iPhone mystery. When Apple announced that the iPhone 4 of the white variety may not be available until later this year due to it being “more challenging to manufacture than we [Apple] originally expected,” skeptics just believed it was an excuse to fix the iPhone’s apparent antenna problems.
And while that may or may not be the case, there does appear to be a separate issue involving light seepage, which comes from the backlight leaking out from the glass edges and white backing. This is a very specific problem to the white phone, since it is far more transparent than the black one. And it is because of the glass that Apple can’t easily cover up the light leakage, unlike if it were metal or plastic, where you can just add another coating of material.
They also compare it to the Sprint EVO 4G leaking light, meaning that it’s not a problem solely in Apple’s manufacturing. But while the white EVO has the same problem, HTC is advertising it as a solution to the unavailability of the white iPhone. This shows Apple’s pickiness about production quality, and that they won’t let this get out the door until they are certain their product is 100%.
Do you think that Apple is fretting this too much? How many of you wouldn’t care because you would just slap a case on it anyway? Let me know in the comments.
