App Store blocking iPad subscriptions, publishers irritated
Sports Illustrated, the well known publication has recently had an iPad app rejected from the App Store. There was no specific reason given, however, it was a new version which allowed for a one-off subscription cost. At the moment, SI, is forced to sell each edition individually, charging $4.99. No one’s sure of Apple’s motives in this case. Do they keep more control by forcing SI’s hand, or is it down to cold, hard cash? Jobs appears to be looking after his bank balance more than his customers in this case.
This is to the outrage of some readers, who do not agree with paying such a high price for each publication released. The customer feedback in iTunes is slightly damning, with 65% of all reviewers giving the app 1 star out of 5, and this down to the price. I think Steve-o needs to wake up and smell the printing ink here. Magazines rely on subscriptions, and have always run that way, so to make it available on digital mags makes sense, surely?
