NOTE from the event coverage staff:

So no carrier announcement was made today. And while there are a few new things to note on the software side, the hardware announcements pretty much matched up to the leaks. We’re going to take a few moments to digest what we’ve just learned, and we’ll offer some reactions shortly. So stay tuned to Today’s iPhone.

What did you think of today’s announcements? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Steve Jobs: “This is going to change everything — all over again… It’s the complete solution so all of us don’t have to be system integrators. This is our new baby, I hope you love it as much as we do.”

.

Price & Availability

Steve: “I’m thrilled to announce AT&T is going to make an incredibly generous upgrade offer. If your contract expires any time in 2010, you are immediately eligible for a new iPhone 4 at the same 199 or 299 prices if you top up your contract 2 years.”  That’s up to 6 months of early eligibility.

The iPhone 4 goes on sale starting June 24th in the U.S., and preorders start June 15th. That’ll bump the whole iPhone lineup down the line: iPhone 3GS will be $99. As for Canada, it’s not included in the initial launch phase.

.

The iPhone 4, which will debut with some accessories at the ready, including a new dock and an Apple “bumper” case. The Bumper case goes around the outside, but the back and front are open, it comes in multiple colors, and will sell for $29. (No word on the dock.) The iPhone 4 will be in 88 countries by end of September.

The iOS4 software update will be available June 21st. It will be compatible for the 3GS, iPhone 3G (though not all features are supported), and the iPod Touch (which again, doesn’t support all the features, and the first-generation is not supported) for free.

.

Color choices? The leaks were RIGHT: Black and white

Comes in a choice of two colors — in white and in black — just like the leaks reported.

“One more thing…”

Steve’s infamous “One more thing” has been uttered… And it’s… VIDEO CALLING.

He’s calling it “Face-Time,” and this news confirms a majorly leaked new hardware feature. The dual cameras — on the front and rear — are for real! (Sly Steve. You didn’t mention this before, when you were talking about the camera!)

Steve: “You can switch from the front or rear camera automatically. It’s WiFi-only in 2010, we’re working with the cellular providers to get things ready.”

“That’s iPhone 4, and we think it’s the biggest leap we’ve taken since the original iPhone. I think you’ll agree there’s more to it than met the eye.”

.

iAds

Steve goes on to wax poetic about iAds. I’m sure it’s exciting and all for advertisers, but from the end users’ perspective, the most exciting thing about it is that it won’t pull you out of an app, just to check out an advertisement. Say you click on an ad while in an app. It will run without shutting it down and sending you to Safari. And you can also just close the ad window and resume your application.

.

When will iOS 4 be available?

Steve: “So, iOS4: we’re going to put a golden master candidate in developers’ hands today. Our final candidate will be in your hands today, and it will be out soon.”

He recaps some of the other announcements:

•This month, the 100 millionth iOS device will be sold.

•iBooks is coming to the iPhone.

•PDF in an email goes straight to iBooks in a PDF shelf.

•iBooks is also coming to iPod Touch.

iBooks automatically and wirelessly will sync your place, bookmarks, and all your notes for free across all your iDevices. You can purchase and download books, and read the same book on all devices

.

The BING vs. Google search question — answered!

Apple’s not getting rid of Google. But it IS adding Bing as a separate search option. Google will still remain the default.

iPhone OS 4 gets a new name — iOS 4 — and some OS treats

First of all, iPhone OS 4 shall heretofore be known as iOS 4. After this announcement, Steve starts redacting a few things that have already been unveiled, like multitasking, app folders, retina display integration, enhancements to mail, the new camera, photo apps and a lot more attention to enterprise integration.

.

New still photo/vid camera

Steve is more concerned with better pics than upping those megapixel numbers. “Megapixels are nice, but what these cameras are really about is capturing photons and low light photography.” So the new cam will have 5 MP, as well as backside illuminated sensor, 1.75 micron pixel size in sensor, 5x digital zoom in camera app and tap to focus with LED flash. AND — it records HD video, in 720p at 30fps!

  • Tap to focus video with built-in video editing
  • One-click sharing.
  • LED flash remains on during video recording.
  • Record, edit, and share HD video right on your phone via iMovie for the iPhone

Steve: “It’s pretty remarkable, but we’re going even further than that.” Next to take the stage is Randy Ubillos, Chief Architect of Vide Applications.

Ubillos: “Record HD video and edit with beautiful transitions and titles, all on the device you carry with you every day.” Users will be able to record right into a timeline or choose the clips and photos that are on the phone. Pinch to scale the timeline. Camera will also tag geolocation into the video.

.

iMovie is not a built-in app, though. It costs $4.99 and it’s available for download via the App Store. (“If we approve it,” cracks Steve. He’s turning into quite the comedian today!)

And soundtracks! Music can be added. There are a few tracks onboard, but you can also tap the tunes in the iPod library. Users will also be able to export 360p, 520p, and 720p. Demoing a video in 720p, produced entirely on the phone. The HD looks beautiful. Not too dark or blown out. Nice.

As for the previous joke about AT&T’s network, Steve gets serious for a sec. He clarifies that 570 WiFi base stations are in the room, and they’re actually responsible for the demo fail earlier.

.

Accelerometer’s so yesterday. iPhone 4’s adding a Gyroscope!

It’s a 3-axis gyroscope that, with accelerometer, means the phone will enable 6-axis motion sensing for precision movements. (Demoing this on a Jenga-type game, Steve cracks a joke, saying at least this won’t require a network. Ouch, AT&T.) So now the iPhone’s coming with a Gyro, accelerometer, compass, proximity and ambient light sensors.

.

Storage & Connectivity

The new handset will have 32GB of storage. It also boasts quadband HSDPA/HSUPA 7.2mbps, capable of 7.2mbit down 5.8mbit up (once carriers support it, that is). It also supports 802.11n. (Giggity! Between the processor upgrade and Wireless N, this thing’s going to be a speed demon!)

.

The Processor & Battery

The new iPhone is — wait for it… POWERED BY APPLE’S A4 CHIP!! (The same snazzy one in the iPad, that offers better battery life and performance boost!)

The battery’s also getting bigger. In fact, it will be the biggest component in the phone. Bigger, higher capacity battery + A4 processor = oodles of good things, like:

  • 40% more talk time
  • 7 hours talk time
  • 6 hours of 3G browsing
  • 10 hours of WiFi browsing
  • 10 hours of video
  • 40 hours of music
  • 300 hours of standby

iPhone 4 is also eco-friendly! The environmental report card shows it’s very recyclable..

.

More on the Retina Display

The screen is 3.5″ at 960×640, 326 ppi. The 800:1 contrast ratio is four times better than 3GS. (Uses IPS technology for better color and wide viewing angle.) “Quite a bit better than OLED.”

iPhone OS 4: Apps look even better because iPhone OS automatically renders text and controls in higher res. With higher res artwork, apps/games on Retina Display “look stunning.”

Steve: “We think it’ll set the standard for the next 7 years, nobody will come close”

.

Funny moment: Epic AT&T fail, right in the middle of the demo?

On stage, they brought in special projectors to demonstrate how nifty this screen is. But to show it off, Steve has some trouble getting the NY Times to load on it. “Networks in here are always unpredictable.”

Enter “Funny Jobs”: “You know you could help me out, if you’re on WiFi if you could just get off… well we’re having a little problem here.” The handset, on AT&T, is showing lots of error messages — no connection to internet. Could not activate cellular network.

Steve laughs. ” Yeah, I know…” then apologizes. A helpful audience member yells: “Try Verizon.”

(Turns out, there are a load of Wifi base stations in the room that were actually causing this.)

.

iPhone 3GS display on the left, Retina Display on the right...

Retina Display

The new iPhone will also have Retina Display, with 326 ppi. “We dramtically increased the pixel density, Four times the amount.” It’s a new display technology, and it’s supposed to dramatically increase pixel density. Four times as many in same space. Anti aliased text, for crisp readability. “There’s never been a display like this on a phone.” (300 ppi is the limit of the human retina when held 10-12 inches away from the eye.) Text on this will read like “a fine printed book.”

The new iPhone 4 – External hardware

There’s over 100 new features, but they’re covering the 8 big ones today.

The first: a new design. “Now, stop me if you’ve already seen this.” [Laughter and cheering erupts.] Wow. Jobsy has a sense of humor. I didn’t imagine that. “Believe me, you ain’t seen it.” There’s glass on the the front and back, and it’s trimmed in stainless steel. “Really thin.”

The new phone is 9.3mm thick, 24% thinner than the 3GS. “The thinnest smartphone on the planet.”

•External buttons: volume up and down, mute, front facing camera. Micro-sim tray, camera with LED flash on back.

•Bottom-situated mic, 30 pin connector, and speaker.

•Top features headphone jack, second mic for noise cancellation and sleep/wake button.

Then Steve singles out a weird line on the side by the volume buttons. People have asked “what’s this?” Seams? What for? Turns out, that stainless steel band is a major feature of the phone: “Brilliant engineering, [to] use the band as part of the Antenna system.”

One side of the phone has the Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS, and the other is UMTS and GSM. “It’s never been done before.”

The new iPhone 4 also uses stainless steel for strength, and glass for optical quality and scratch resistance.

.

Steve is back on stage, talking about the iPhone and teasing the new one.

First, he’s sharing stats, like the App Store reaching 5 billion downloads last week. Apple has paid more than $1 billion bucks to developers so far. It’s the “most vibrant app community on the planet.” More numbers talk:

•Q1 2010: iPhone has 28% of the US market share (Android’s got 9%). (Hey, Steve, that’s a quick little jab, no?)

•US mobile browser usage for May, iPhone at 58%.

•Android has 22.7% browser usage

etc…

(C’mon, Steve! Let’s get to the goods!)

2007: iPhone re-invents the phone. 2008: iPhone 3G and the App Store. 2009: iPhone 3GS is twice as fast with newer and cooler features. Now there’s iPhone 4 in 2010: “The biggest leap since original iPhone… This is really hot.”

.

Farmville and Guitar Hero apps

Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga, has some announcements: Farmville, their most popular game, is coming to the iPhone. “More people play Zynga games than watch the season finales of Lost and 24.” Farmville has more than 70 million monthly active users.

Activision Senior VP Karthik Bala is up, talking about Guitar Hero. The new Guitar Hero shows 3D rockstars that are fully customizable. Comes with classic rock like Queen and Rolling Stones as well as new artists like Rise Against. In addition to tapping inputs, there’s also a new strumming input that makes use of the multitouch display to “make the gameplay perfect.” It is available today for $2.99.

.

The Netflix app — for the iPhone??

CEO Reed Hastings of Netflix is on deck, to talk about Netflix on the iPhone. The Netflix iPad app has been a huge success. It’s one of the Top 10 most downloaded apps. And guess what? Netflix for the iPhone is coming this summer. (YIPPEE!!) They’re demoing the app on stage.

Hastings is talking about how a movie can be stopped on any device, and then picked up where you left on another one. He also points out that the iPhone app will offer all of Netflix’s online functionality, including instant queue, recommendations, and etc. There’s one omission, though: No mention of 3G compatibility.

.

The App Store and the “Non Adobe Flash” Talk (i.e., a word about HTML5)

Steve: “We support two platforms at Apple. Two. The first is HTML5, a fully-open, uncontrolled platform that is forged and defined by standards bodies. We fully support HTML5. Apple’s browsers are in the lead in terms of supporting the full HTML5 standard, and we are behind this 100%. It is fully open.”

There are 15,000 apps that are submitted per week, and 95% get approved within  7 days.

.

iPad Apps

He’s talking about some of the latest, including Pulse, WebMD, Gowalla, Ebay, plus some education apps. There are 8,500 iPad apps in the store so far, downloaded more than 35 million times. That’s 17 apps per device that have been loaded. iBooks is also going to be updated. iBooks stats: “In the first 65 days,” says Jobs, “users have downloaded over 5 million books. That’s about 2.5 books per iPad…” A PDF viewer has also been built-in, so users can look at PDFs AND iBooks. Nice.

.

The iPad

Steve is talking about the iPad. “It’s changing the way we experience the web, email, photos, maps, video, you name it. It’s a whole new way to interact with the internet, apps, content and media.” He’s showing news coverage from all kinds of media outlets. One iPad sells every 3 seconds! Shipping in 9 of 10 countries. So far, they’ve sold 2 million so far. By the end of July, there will be iPads in 19 countries.

.

Steve Jobs has come out! There are over 5,200 attendees here with over 120 sessions and hands on labs by over 1,000 Apple engineers at WWDC.

“Welcome to WWDC 2010 — please turn off your cellphones and PDAs.”
