iPhone 3G users can jailbreak and unlock iOS4
Happy Friday! For all of those iPhone 3G fans that didn’t upgrade to the iPhone 4, I have a treat for you!
iOS4 became available to us on Monday and on Tuesday it was officially jailbroken and unlocked. After personally testing out the jailbreak and unlock, I bring you my guide and warnings to go along with it.
We start with the ground work and a couple of disclaimers. Once you have upgraded your iPhone to iOS4, there is no going back. I have tried a couple of methods that claim you can upgrade your iPhone and still revert back to an earlier OS. Frankly, it caused so many bugs, I spent more time trying to fix them than I was just using the phone normally. In other words, I don’t recommend it. Now my second disclaimer. If you enjoy using the tweaks that we have talked about over the past couple of months, you will either need to wait to upgrade or deal with not having them. I have found very few tweaks and applications that are compatible with the new update.
Now that I have said my piece, let’s get you ready to jailbreak and unlock.
Here is what you are going to need:
1. You will need to download iOS4 for the iPhone 3G (link to download)
2. If you haven’t updated your iTunes to 9.2 yet, you will need to do so. (link to download)
3. You will need to download redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3. If you have a mac (link to download) or if you have a PC (link to download) it works on both systems.
4. Now that you are prepared for jailbreaking and unlocking, you need to start by restoring your iPhone and updating to iOS4 with iTunes. If you rely on an   unlock to use your iPhone on T-Mobile, make sure that you have your T-Mobile sim card placed inside your iPhone when beginning this process.
Before you proceed to the next step, you will need to connect your iPhone to your computer and then turn it off. You can severely damage your device if you do not make sure that your iPhone is turned off.
5. Once your iPhone has rebooted, open up redsn0w. It will ask you for the original iOS4 firmware (what you downloaded in step 1.) Select the file and once this is validated, you will receive a second screen that lets you choose multitasking and wallpapers if you want them. This is where you will also choose to have Cydia installed. It is very imperative that you have Cydia installed. If you don’t you will not be able to unlock your iPhone and add tweaks in the future.
As the process continues, you will begin finger exercises of pressing the power button for 3 seconds, then press power+home key for 10 seconds and then release the power key and continue holding the home key for 30 seconds. There is a timer on the screen that will let you know when to push what buttons so you will not have to guess as to how long you need to hold that power key down.
After you iPhone has completely installed this software and has rebooted, you will be ready to unlock.
6. You will need to start by connecting up to your WiFi. Now you need to go into Cydia and add the source: http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (yes there is a 0 and not a capitalized o in the word snow.) If you are unfamiliar on how you add a source, you can follow this guide.
Once added, search for “ultrasn0w” and install. This application is what will allow your iPhone to be unlocked to work on another wireless provider. After this has installed your iPhone will officially be unlocked but you will need to make some minor adjustments in your settings for your internet and picture messaging to work.
7. Open up your SETTINGS > GENERAL > NETWORK > and make sure that “Enable 3G” is turned off.
Now go into CELLULAR DATA NETWORK > and place this into the APN for your internet to work.
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Now skip down to MMS
APN: epc.tmobile.com (leave username and password blank.)
MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
